Wolk Lab Discussion

  1. Group 3 What is the inquiry based teaching?
    - The teacher facilitates the work of students as they work their way through the outer ring of the cycle.
    - Science is the one subject that almost everyone agrees should be inquiry-based.
    - Curriculum is not just the facts and skills we teach, but the knowledge we create together and the understandings and connections that each learner makes from that knowledge.
    - Inquiry is also not "discovery learning." It is not a free for all, and it is not about letting students study what ever they want.

  2. Group 1:
    Intro/Wondering about the World.
    - 7th 8th grader teachers create a interdisciplinary inquiry on sugar.
    - They show the students film on how the sugar industry works.
    - It comes to a surprise to the students because it was nothing like they expected it to be.
    - Schools don't teach students about employment so they don't know a lot about how it is to work.

Students have 0 knowledge about the world, they spend most of their time doing things that aren't going to help them better their future. Students are often given instructions to follow but they don't know why they're following them, they don't know the concept and structure of it.

    -student-initiated inquiry
.Students need some type of choice/agreement in what they learn. children need time in school to inquire into topics and questions they may have.

what about content standards test scores?
.students who learn through inquiry have content knowledge. academic knowledge is a fundamental part of the experience.
    -getting started,moving forward
.the transmission begins inside the teachers heads. teachers should see themselves as creators ,not deliverers . teachers need to have the vision ,intellect, and ability for success in the inquiry.

  4. group 2- transmission teaching and the illusion of learning
topic-why do they have trouble remembering what they've been taught.
major topic-inquiry is just an illusion because it looks like they're paying attention, but they're really not. teachers are more focused on tests, and quizzes. So that makes it hard for the students to be intellectually engaged trying to focus on the lecture.

    What Inquiry is Not?
    A.) Hands On
    - An essential part of inquiry is engaging in discussion and debate which would not be seen as "hands on."
    - Having students make a hands on project will do nothing to help them investigate the inquiry question.
    B.) Teacher Responsibility
    - Inquiry is not about letting student study whatever they want.
    - Students to pursue and discuss there questions and ideas.
