Group Assignment: Read "Pedagogy of Poverty Versus Good Teaching" - Martin Haberman
Presentation: 5-8 min
Begin to critically analyze the text (construct/build meaning).
You are not summarizing the essay to present.
Pick something specific within the article that you wish to discuss as a group.
You have the autonomy of presenting anyway you want
Medium:
- If you are using multi-media, please bring device to use in class that can be used with projector(ex. laptop computer)
- If using power point, save in USB drive
- If using YouTube, keep to minimal
- If handing out material, please make sufficient copies
Rubric:
- Everyone must participate
- I will be providing FEEDBACK for each individual group
- ORIGINALITY of presentation will be taken into account
- Looking for thoughtful ANALYSIS and interpretations of the TEXT (Article)
ESSAY:
- Due Next Class meeting
- 3 pages / You can split this up between group members
- I don't want three seperate response papers
- I want a unified paper / cohesive / organized essay
- Construct meaning, use your writing experience, use discussions in class to guide your paper
- Use academic related information that we have used in class if you want (Pedagogy/Metacognition//Standardized Testing/Rhetorical Reading)
The first group that presented was very organized and had a good loud voice for everyone that can hear and i liked how they talked about on "Good Teaching." Vanessa, Agelica, and Freddy.

ReplyDeletejoes group had such good information and presented very well.
ReplyDelete@Karla, Mark, and Joe: had alot of good information
ReplyDeletejavies group was very good on speaking about their topic and very supportive to eachother.
ReplyDeleteJose, Rosie, and Romeo-Great point. As technology advances, it is replacing textbooks and it can become useful through projectors, use of power points, computer, etc. It comes with both pros and cons. Great clear presentation.
ReplyDeleteFaith, Janie C., Janie H.- Great point. A lot of the reasons students fail to succeed is do to language barrier, their level in society, and not having that support to push them forward. Good touch with the YouTube video.
David, Kassandra, Angelina- In Urban cities poverty is greater. There are a lot of struggling families and families with absent parents due to work. This causes a lot of kids to do what ever they want. No one to teach them right from wrong or to guide them through the right path. Good presentation. Great points.
Karla, Mark, Joe- Good presentation. Very well put together and informative. Great job.
Javie, Jesus, Crystal-I agree that due to their way of living does cause some to give up. They aren't used to success and they don't know how to achieve it. No one introduced them to it.Good presentation.
Nice job with the observation Freddy!! Excellent feedback!!

• Good visuals
• You were specific from the start with discussing GOOD TEACHING
• MLK was an agent for change, not only kids but society as well.
• Reading off slides doesn’t make for a very effective presentation, there’s too much information on the slides and it’s kind of just going over our heads
• The presentation was too short, I think you could have covered more information discussed by Habberman with regard to GOOD TEACHING
Rosita / Jose / Romeo
• Technology effect students
• Expands the way that we learn
• What does Habberman say about this Part of student’s life
• Create Share Text Communication!!! Good!!
• Rosita “In my time” hahah ME TOO!!
• Love how you took personal knowledge into a discussion
• It does seem all three of you did your own thing. Needed to be a little more organized, preparation. A power point on just images would have been good Visual learning
Faithe / Janie C / Janie H
• Teaching and learning
• Dropout rate
• I like how you started your presentation with the discussion
• They should have had someone push them to become successful Expand on this What does Habberman say
• How is the video relevant to your presentation?
• Dead air Preparation, more organized
• Urban teaching and normal teaching are different? Maybe socioeconomic/sociocultural differences but good teaching, we assume should be the same. Are we able to see good teaching? I think we could
David / Kassandra / Angelina
• Good Teaching / Highly vs. Poorly Educated
• Class system, rich vs. poor How do the rest of us feel about this would have made for a good discussion
• There were many generalities made in the presentation. I do appreciate your viewpoint on the subject
• Think about the conversation that we had in class. What is a good education? A formal education, the education of our parents? Rich vs Poor? We can’t assume that either provide a more superior education than the other.
Karla / Mark / Jose
• What is Good Teaching
• The list you gave is what Habberman assumes to be good teaching
• 14 Rules push you to success
• Monitoring Seats it’s not a big deal lol That’s what Habberman is saying
• You all misunderstood this portion of the essay which I’ll cover with you next class meeting
• I think deep down you didn’t completely buy in to what the 14 acts constitute, just by your reaction to “monitoring seats” that and “punishing” that this is something problematic which goes hand in hand with what Habberman was saying.
Javi / Jesus / Crystal
• How poverty has an effect in learning
• How it ties into urban youth
• Has to be patience, the wanting to helping others, it starts at home
• Presentation was way too short
• You needed to be more prepared and organized
• The discussion was good, you should have had presented more of that
• I want your discussion to translate into your essay, the same exact way that we talked about in class
